The race was definitely a challenging adventure! Starting with a hilly, and fast 10k where I felt great, leading to a 150k bike with 3 loops of a pretty solid course, 2 real hills which I actually looked forward to each lap.. it’s the flat and into the wind where I need to improve.. and there was lots of that to give me some practice.. then transition and onto the last run, and equally if not hillier 30k consisting of two 15k loops, where you run up and around this flat area over looking the town, that was pretty cool but super punishing, into the woods, out, around that field again, around the turn around, into the woods back to the stupid field, down, thennn do it again on that second 15k.. I was super excited to get the wrist band marking that I was on the second (and final) 15k which meant just one more up and then I blasted it on the way down.. I think overall I did quite well, being able to beat some ITU guys from lots of different countries. It was definitely a tough race… I would recommend it to anyone that likes to suffer and feel strong for doing so. During the bike and run I felt like I couldn’t go much faster.. but I wasn’t completely exhausted or anything so I think with a little more training I could really get to like this distance – gotta learn to like flat I suppose and get some more miles in on the ol’ running shoes probably.

Since the race I spent a day checking out the art of Switzerland, visiting the Kunstmuseum of Basel and the Cartoonmuseum. Then I rode to Belfort from Pratteln. Belfort is nice, there’s some good weather over here, I keep looking north at the Vosgues mountains.. I’m tempted to take a day and ride around in them (without the backpack that makes the commuting from city to city less enjoyable) and then I’ll continue on to Nancy to prepare for Standard Distance World Duathlon Championships!

Bergen 5k & caz tri 2012

It was a great weekend of racing, nothing says volume like back to back hard race efforts… well I suppose lots of other things say volume, ie . trying to do both dante’s east and west in one day (some day, some day)… or any number of other things.. but this weekend was fun!

Bergen 5k

Saturday I joined up with a handful of fellow Syracuse Track Club guys to race as a team in the Bergen 5k, Kevin, William, Derek, myself, Sam, Stephen and Lenny. We all agreed it was a good start to the season. Good to get a solid group together and finishing third as a team we were able to win a little cash which is always nice.

I was excited to race a 5k to see what sort of pace I can actually run as lately for workouts I’ve been estimating what my race pace would be I’d been calling 5:20’s my goal race pace and was very excited to after all to run a 16:18, averaging 5:15’s per mile (exciting now .. but now all my workouts are going to be that much faster aka harder! ruht-rroh 🙂 that’s gonna hurt ) I haven’t done just a running race in a while, and it was kind of weird / refreshing!  The race was pretty fast, made me realize there is still a lot of work to be done, as my 16:18 earned me 34th over all which is good enough to get a cool etched pint glass awarded for top 50.. but dudes were running in the 14’s .. gotta get up there!

Then Saturday was the Cazenovia Triathlon!

The Caz Tri is kind of the CNY Triathlon Club’s crown jewel, they do a great job organizing training events, educational opportunities for new triathletes, with their Winter Training Facility and all but above all that every year they pull together one of the best races in the area offering the sprint and intermediate/olympic distance races. Their is a hill climb challenge on the first little portion of the bike (who doesn’t love a hill climb challenge) and it’s a beautiful clear lake, just challenging enough bike course with a mix of easy grades, a fast descent or two with some fun twisties and enough inclines / false flats to keep you honest and working hard the whole time! Then the run is awesome, a tough out (up) and back (down) which makes for a super fast and fun finish.

Dad, Robert Hadzor, ended up 21st overall!! and 1st in his age group and I ended up 2nd overall and 1st in the hill climb.

Lots of familiar faces at Caz, Eric Hinman took the win, Bill Houser taking 3rd, (fast swimmers!!) K was in the top ten, prolly would have been top 5 if he came out to ride ‘cross bikes with us Friday 😛 . Great job all around to everyone, racers, organizers, volunteers, spectators.

Very fun weekend for sure.

TTT & Delta Lake Tri

Saturday was my first ever Team Time Trial.. Eric Gregoire, Dan Fitch caught wind of a race in Sidney, NY and gave a shout to see if I was interested, there was some prize money up for grabs and the concept of the race sounded fascinating. 4man team time trial. Needless to say I was incredibly excited.. unfortunately it conflicted with the STREND competition but since in just about 5 weeks or so I’ll need to be in prime TT shape for the Duathlons in Europe I figured the wise choice was to go out and race really fast in a straight line with them. We were also able to talk Brent Morehouse of Morehouse-HFC into coming out to round out our 4 man team.

Despite slight catastrophe at the roundabout on the way out of the out and back course where Gregoire exhibited some impressive aerial maneuvers he was able to collect himself and ride with an amazing amount of smoothness remarkably his bicycle was still in rolling condition but with broken saddle, shoe strap, and all kinds of rubbing and out of true wheels. We may have lost around 30 seconds in the incident but we were able to regroup and hammer on. At the turn around, we had unfortunate timing to be approaching another team and inevitably passing them right at the turn around which slowed us down a bit more, cause a little confusion as we ended up slimming the group down to just Fitch, Morehouse and myself. We ended up second over all to the Timmerman-Grodyki-Choseko team; a respectable finish considering it all!

The race was incredibly fun. I have a feeling we’ll all be on the lookout for another TTT in the near future.

Sunday ATC Endurance held the Delta Lake Sprint / Intermediate distance triathlons.

It was a beautiful day for a tri; warm, clear blue skies, cool water.

My Dad and I (Bob Hadzor and Randy Hadzor) both ended up winning our age groups in the intermediate distance.

It was great fun I had the Syracusian Cervelo from Syracuse Bicycle all dialed in with the disc so there was a lovely woosh sound effect added to the beautiful days scenery while out on the bike.

Lots of familiar faces from the CNY Triathlon Club and good ol’ Fleet Feet friends. Also – a man you may know from our BTB Snowshoe Team, Luke Fitzgibbons, finished very well in  his age group in the Sprint Division! It was fun to see the guys from Bike Loft East out doing their awesome neutral race support; 2 motorcycles with wheels and a van patrolling the bike course with neutral bikes incase mechanical issues got serious. Then of course there were the delicious post race half moon cookies, lots of goodies and even kegs of Saranac beer!

* (unfortunately at Delta Lake there were a few intermediate distance competitors that got their directions confused and the course ended up being shortened by the path they took. Rather than the left for the full last loop of the Intermediate, there was a right option which was for the Sprint finishing lap; some including Bob H. took this turn in error as he heard the volunteer and fellow competitors indicate it as the way to go… immediately after the finish/realizing the error we jogged out  and he ran the portion initially missed and I clocked it at 8’18” which if added would have still secured his 1st in age group finish.. I’m not sure if anything else is off in the results but just worth noting.)

giro of otisco lake 2012

Saturday was the Giro of Otisco Lake where all the crazy, strong, fun, hardworking cyclists of the area came out to battle for 30ish miles of some beautiful country roads dashed with a solid sprinkling of intense hill climbing.

The race was broken down into 3 fields and was the first year being an official USAC santioned race of it 11 years as a fund raiser for the Spafford Area Historical Society, which benefits the School House where the race starts and finishes, midway up the Stanton road hill.

The attendance was good as lots of strong area riders and several of the local teams were represented; Corning, Bike Loft East, Swan’s Cookies, Max Power Cycling, Paceline,  Ruud, Ommegangsters, and the Mello Velo team with all three of the Hadzors,  Nilsson and several other rogue individuals came out of seclusion to stretch their sinewy muscles. The race went off swiftly with the blow of a whistle and the long grind began up the top half of Stanton road. With a handful of attacks on the top ridge between Otisco and Skaneateles Lakes where  if you had time to peak left or right either side had picturesque views.

I was particularly excited for this race since witnessing the pain on peoples faces as we heckled riders on the final climb last year. Though I’ve been babying some injury stuff and working with the scientifically trained voodoo medicine men at Morehouse HFC and Dr. John Castle to remedy a compensation kind of injury that’s been bothering the knee and attempting to correct some glute hamstring hip flexor quad muscle imbalances and as I’ve put my wisdom and patience to the limit I finally gave to in to typical endurance athlete urge to just get the hell back out there, and there was no way I was going to miss the opportunity to race on stanton, route 20, coon hill and church hill/stanton.  The day prior to the race Brent (M-HFC) dialed Celeste back in to reasonable position to alleviate a lot of discomfort from the position I had messed up moving things around in random response to pain through the duathlons earlier on. I was very happy to have minimal to no pain through the race… I’m very excited to get back at it and it felt great to ride again!

All in all it was a great race, probably one of the most honest field efforts I’ve seen in a while with lots of riders doing work and keeping it interesting.

tour de syracuse 2012

The Tour de Syracuse was only a road race this year. Though we missed the awesome all day picnic feel of the crit in onondaga park the road race was still a blast. With all 3 Hadzors racing, many of the usual cast of characters, with a couple fun tweaks to the rr course made for a fun day.

BTB Tour de Syracuse results:
+ Randy Hadzor won the 55m cat 3 race
+ Wes Hadzor survived the 55m cat 5 race

Dueling Duathlons

Saturday May 12th… option: Du the Lakes or Fly by Night.. Two great races, one runbikerun with a nice trail run around the soft and scenic greenlakes. Another, runbikerunbikerun on an international speedway, decent inclines and tunnels…

Bob was all signed up for Fly by Night.

I opted for Du the Lakes.

Du the Lakes 2012

We went, race was good. Though it was kind of weird to start in the 5th / last wave and have to navigate through the crowds on the first run. It was fun slipping in between groups and dodging trees and such… sorry if you were wearing headphones and I scared the mess out of you when I came by… Headphones aren’t allowed in races.. you can’t hear things around you, otherwise you would have probably heard ‘on your left, right or something of the sort’ and probably not been startled.. though your reactions were a little entertaining.  After dipping and dodging and not knowing how the 1st wave was fairing I ended up 3rd, and main mission accomplished of keeping the ol’ hamstring intact and running surprisingly decent run splits.

There was solid NWT contingent at the race, sportin’ sweet kits and solid results. It was nice seeing those guys and fun to see the logo everywhere that varietystudios designed for them. Also in attendance were a bunch of the local dudes; Ken Hammond rode in raced, rode home with some hardware, Jamie Campbell reppin’ bikeloft, Eric Hinman and Mike Corona both top NWT finishers and many others, the winner was a dude named Treadwell who was rockin’ some sweet team usa shorts, very shiny bicycle and nice cycling jersey sleeve length tan line to match… see the results and other info.

Great job all!

So we loaded up and took off so dad/Bob could get his stuff together to head down to Watkins Glen.

Fly By Night 2012

When we arrived, as Bob checked in there was no line at day of registration… I had my bike and all my gear in the car.. the energy of the event was good… since the race in the morning I had had a decent lunch, a little nap, and my legs felt pretty good.. so… I filled out the form and as I helped get my dads tires all aired up I got my stuff ready as well… still wanting to take it easy on the hamstring I promised I’d take it easy on the runs and try to push it on the bike, as my bike average from the morning was sub-satisfactory, and if I felt anything weird with the legs I was going to bag it.

The race was great, with the course and the people and the transition and the race track, the announcers and everything. It went great, hamstring remained intact, dad and I were able to yell encouragement at each other during one of the bike laps .. it was a blast.

Bob Hadzor finished 2nd in his age group, besting his last Fly by Night time substantially.

I ended up 9th or 10th overall, Travis Kuhl took the win for his 7th consecutive Fly by Night win, continuing his unbeaten streak. See the complete results here.
There was a great BBQ post race, that perfectly filled that usually annoying post race linger time.

Finishing up under the lights… all in all, a nice day of racing, good workouts, great fun.

Tour de Syracuse next weekend. post race potluck BBQ at BTB2611 (bicycle art gallery, Fine Carpentry HQ, and home of Wesley Hadzor) see you all there.
